Lower Access Pits

Part one in what will be a short saga of access pits!  The lower access pits are part of my model that wasn't part of the original Falcon as it appeared in 1977.  Before they added the forward landing gear boxes for The Empire Strikes Back the lower access pits occupied a more central location on the lower saucer as seen in this image:
This original design was reflected in the full sized set pictured below, but if you look carefully behind the hoses you'll see a metal support.
The weight of the mandibles (as well as the cockpit in the case of this set) required more support than the single forward landing gear could provide so when constructing the set for The Empire Strikes back, two additional forward landing gear boxes were added to the design and ultimately the 5 foot filming miniature.
This change in design changed the look of the lower access pits which were moved outward and thinned out a bit.
Here are some renders of my lower access pits:
And here is the part ID map:
I had a hard time finding clear reference for the port side lower access pits so a lot of the parts in there were eyeballed to the best of my ability.  As I uncover more about these parts I will continue to update.  Also you'll notice some of the McLaren parts are mirrored from one side to the other.  This was a tactic I used to fill space in areas I was unsure about or had poor reference for.

As always here's an image of our progress so far:
Thank you for reading!  I also want to mention that with the help of Lee Malone of Rogue Studio Productions I will be updating some part ID maps.  Tonight I've updated the Dish Greebles.

Next time: Upper access pits

  2. This is a brilliant breakdown of the falcon. I am not a big star wars fan... wouldnt consider myself a star wars geek, but i am interested in a project to build one. Do you know if there are actual measurements of the falcon? ie dimensions of the mandibles, hull, sides etc. Again... love your blog. keep up the great work.

    1. Thanks for the kind words! I have been actually doing an overhaul on the bottom of my Falcon so expect to see some of these part lists updated soon (I hope). For dimensions on the 5 footer I have to recommend The diagrams Joshua Maruska has made on his blog "falconers" http://falcon.maruskadesign.com/files/ There is an RPF thread that corresponds with his work as well here: https://www.therpf.com/f11/millenium-falcon-parts-3d-printing-168520/ Hope this is helpful, and would love to see some progress if you get this project going!

  4. Hi Jay,

Keep checking back to your site. Your part maps are amazing and amazingly clear!
I did just finish up the top Turret Base (except for that one part all the way on the right, rectangular piece with a curve...can’t find it in my kits for the life of me!!!) Here is a short video of what I got done. Just need to glue it up. It’s all tapped down...

Anyway, notice someone else is searching for the same thing I am....bottom Turret information. If there is anything you could share out, i’d Really appreciate it! I can’t get a good photo of it!

    Thanks
    Kevin

    1. Looks awesome, Kevin, nice job! I know I've been MIA for a while now. I came across a ton of good reference and I've been in process of updating my model to be more accurate, including an overhaul of the bottom panel layout which had previously matched the ESB set. I did get a bit sidetracked with work and teaching but I should resume posting in the next couple of months. I'll consult what I have tonight and see if I have an ID for the part you described. I recall the bottom turret IDs I have being pretty good but I will let you know!
